Nomads dream big

Mighty Wanderers have unveiled plans to construct a mini-stadium once their ambitious clubhouse renovation project is complete.

The club’s president and main sponsor Thomson Mpinganjira said this after appreciating the clubhouse renovations works in Chichiri, Blantyre on Tuesday.

The business magnate and philanthropist said: “It will be interesting that after completing the [clubhouse] renovations, focus will now switch to looking for land where we the team can train or even construct a mini-stadium where can play our games. That is our next target.

“The issue is about finding land because leasing other people’s facilities is proving to be a challenge. I remember we wanted to lease Chilomoni Stadium and Sulom [Super League of Malawi] accepted, but we had  problems getting FAM’s approval.”

Mpinganjira, who is also Mighty Wanderers [2021] Limited board chairperson, also said he is impressed with the  progress of the works.

He said: “I would say so far, so good. What I have seen is impressive. The boardroom is ready, what we need to do is to equip it with furniture. The gym is also ready.  Now we have finish off the administration offices. It’s just a bit of tiding up here and there. The next project is to build a gazebo for the players where they can sit and relax.

“But we still have a lot of work to do because after the gazebo project, we will work on a place where people can come with their families and have a good time. We will also erect a playground for children,” he said.

Mpinganjira also urged the supporters to support the team.

He said: “I urge the fans to show up at the grounds, pay the entry fees at the gates because the money helps in the club’s operations. They should also register as members.

“A real supporter will always support the club. On our part, we are doing everything to make sure that the club performs.”

In a separate interview, the club’s chairperson for commercialisation directorate Annexe Kalinde disclosed that so far the club has spent K475 million on the clubhouse renovations.

“We are now sourcing quotations for air conditioning for the boardoom,  administration block, gym and sports shop,” he said.

Kalinde said the entire project is estimated to cost K1.5 billion.

He said the club now has its own modern ice cube making machine for players.

The Nomads’ clubhouse renovations, which are being carried out by JJ Construction Limited, started early 2024.
